Yesterday I went on a bird watching trip… That’s right I said bird watching…. My boy Kevin is a guide for Hawaii forest and trail out here in Kona and one of the tours he does is a bird watching one (which I would like to say that he is a master at he can name hundreds of different birds with just a glimpse of them and even tell what kind of bird it is by just a faint bird song off in the distance so Big ups to the K-man) so instead of hanging out by myself all day I went to work with him and tagged along on the tour….Now when I think of bird watching I think of something that is not going to be that exciting and when I think of people that come on vacation to Hawaii and pay good money to go on a birding tour I think of old boring scientist type people…And for the most part I was right… Not to much excitement and the people where power dorks but I guess that’s not really nice of me to say because I really had a good time and I saw birds that are very rare endangered endemic species that I would probably never have seen in my regular day life so in that aspect I had a great time and am now proud to be call a Birder…. Some birds that I saw where Black Francolin, Erckel’s Francolin, Kalij Pheasant, Ring-neck Pheasant, Wild Turkey, California Quail, Rock Dove, Spotted Dove, Zebra Dove, Common Myna, Japanese White-eye, Red-Billed Leiothrix, Skylark, House Sparrow, Red Avadavat, African Silverbill, Nutmeg Mannikin, Saffron Finch, House Finch, and some of the native birds Hawaiian Coot, Pueo, `Elepaio, `Oma`o, Palila, Hawai`i Amakihi, `Akiapola`au, I`iwi, `Apapane…. I know that reading all this has probably bored you to death, but you have to remember I am now a Birder and a non exciting old scientist power dork……

I was lucky enough to get tickets to second round Utah Jazz playoff last night… The crowd and the company were unreal… And the Jazz came to play and didn’t disappoint winning the game in the last minute of play 116 to 112… Wednesday is the next game so I don’t know if I am going to go back to Hawaii or stay a few more days and go to the game….

Let me make a long story short… Cuz I have done a lot in the last 4 weeks….I was suppose to go to Utah to snowboard with my brother, but due to a injury I didn’t go… So instead I went to Denver with my Mom for a few days and then I went to the W.B. for about 2 and a half weeks of a long anticipated fun in the sun with some of the best friends in the world (I would like to thank the Lang Bro’s and Club Coral for giving me a place to lay my head).... And now I am in Utah for my brother’s graduation… Which I would like to say Congratulations to him for his great accomplishment… And in a few days I will be back in Hawaii to try and start a new life… I have done so much but have taken hardly any pictures, but I will post what I have….. Sorry that they are out of order my blogspot is acting crazy…

These pictures where taken at Snowbird in Utah on May 5.... Thats right a snow storm in may, about a foot and a half of snow fell at the top of the mountain...

Wahiawa Botanical Garden

Went to the Wahiawa Botanical Garden today it is 27 acre forested ravine on a 1000 ft plateau that is located in the center of O'ahu...The plant collection included native Hawaiian plants, palms, aroids, heliconias, gingers, tree ferns, and epiphyets....These are just a few pictures of the Banyon trees...

Road Closed

A rockslide that happend early this morning (4/07/07) closed a section of kamehameha Hwy. just past Waimea Bay or just before Waimea depending on which direction you are coming from...This is not the first time nor will it be the last time that something like this will happen...The rockslide took out a safety wall that was installed after the last rockslide.. The road is expected to be reopened sunday night...But the really bad news is that there is a 15-25 Ft (the face of the wave) swell that is hitting the north shore tomorrow and if you want to go and surf past Waimea then you are going to have to drive the other way around the island which will probably take you about 2 hours....stay tune for any changes...

Lake Pukaki was formed when a glacier receded and ground out a valley..Which the glacier then melted and filled...The cloudy milky turquoise color of the lake is suspended glacial flour ..which is extremely small ground up quartz and feldspar which is formed from the Glacier grinding against the rock beneath it as it receds.....I did some learning while i was on my travels......Just some fun facts for you...

So we have left New Zealand about a week ago and have been in fiji for about 3 days and 3 nights..and are about to be back in the good old U.S.A....tomorrow but it is really going to be today or maybe it will be yesterday....i dont know..but i do know that i am going back in time..and will be living the 18th all overr again...but it wont be that bad..i spent all day sunday on some far off remote island in fiji and will now spend all day sunday again in hawaii...it will be one really long good day i will tell more when i get back to hawaii...but it is crazy that the trip is over.....my mind has been opened....

Kerosene Creek hot springs.....and the place really smelled like kerosene...
Andy being the scientist that he is wanted to tie a rope around a rock and throw it in to see just how deep the spring really was....but we couldn't find enough rope...
We found a place that would let you camp and use there hot spring pools for only 13 dollars a day what a deal...The road to Rotorua is know as the thermal highway... There was hot springs all over the place...

So we really don't have much else to do but travel around and see the sights and try and experience the cultures of the places that we have been... So Thats what we have been doing for the last 2 nights... We where staying in Golden bay the most northern part of the south island and found a place that had some live music so we went and check it out the place was called the mussel inn. ..It was a very small local hang out... so that night the band was call the pacific curls... 3 native pacific island women was the make up of the band... The music was a mix of old school pacific island music and instruments with a contemporary sound to it..They play 13 different instruments in all and one was the nose flute ( Joe i think that was the instrument that you use to play in your high school band) . It was a brilliant show... we liked it so much that we ended up going on tour with them..and the next stop was a town called Nelson and that is where we are right now.. the show was last night and it was great we all had a great time jamming out....I think that we might have to much free time on are hands and have been hanging out with to many hippy's but what ever... so now we are debating on if we want to go to the west side of the island for the next show..... www.pacificcurls.com

So we are now at the top of the south island around the Nelson area... we had to charge it from the bottom of the south all the way along the west coast to where we are now so that we could get away from the sand flys..... what are sand flys you ask??? They are the devils pet if you ask me.....small black flys that suck your blood and they come by the thousands and are everywhere.....we could not take it anymore......and the only reason that i am on the net right now is because we are waiting for are rental to get a new tire put on it...so that make 2 tires now in less than 2 weeks that we have had to change on the rental....I think that we rally to hard....so we will be heading to the north island soon and then to fiji maybe ....i am thinking about changing my ticket and just heading to hawaii...the travels are starting to take its toll.....

The snow caps of Mt. Cook which was named after Captain Cook the same guy that found Hawaii (the hawaiian people killed and ate him to by the way) and the lake that is next to Mt. Cook but i cant remember the name of it i have to look it up and then i will repost it...
